This month I'm coming to you from the sun coast of Florida but the column will be about things of interest to Islanders. I'll be here for the next little while but I'll try to keep you in touch with happenings that involve Islanders at home and abroad.
Garnet Buell is at it again. He has just released a CD full of his favourite country songs collected over the years. This CD is a musical walk down memory lane for Garnet and includes covers of many of the songs that he grew up with, like “Silver Haired Daddy Of Mine,” as well as country hits from the 70s and 80s such as Merle Haggard's “Mama's Hungry Eyes” and “Sing Me Back Home.”
Garnet has a great love for this type of country music and it shows. This is his third CD in as many years and he continues to sell well in the local marketplace. The simple style that his music adheres to is well received by his many fans.
The musicians on this CD are all accomplished at what they do and add their own style to give this project a special flavour. Serge Bernard is on banjo, mandolin, dobro, and fiddle, Peter Burke is on harmonica, George MacPhee and Randy Benjamin are on electric guitars, Gill Nowlan is on Pedal Steel, Saundra Emery and Glenda Johnston provide vocal harmonies, and that same old guy as before is on electric and acoustic guitars, bass and mandolin.
I'm sure that you'll enjoy the fact that this CD has twenty one cuts on it so you won't have to running to your player to change CDs. Garnet always gives you lots for your money.
I'm sure Garnet will be launching this CD in the near future so keep an eye on the local papers for more information about that event. If you'd like to have a copy of this CD to add to your collection or you'd just like to have a chat give Garnet a call at 902-962-3846, I'm sure he'd be glad to hear from you.
Keep your eyes open for some more CDs from local artists over the next few months as they gear up for the summer sales season.
We took in a local bluegrass band on a Thursday night at a local Italian Restaurant. The crowd was large and the beer was cold so needless to say we had a good time. The bluegrass festivals get in full swing in the next week or so and we'll be taking in some of those in so we'll have a report on that.
Over the next little while we'll be going to The Florida State Fair, The Florida Strawberry Festival and, of course, Islander Day in March.
