After the Labour Day weekend the bluegrass music season seems to end with a crushing realization that it'll be another year before we will be able to sit in the sunshine and listen to our favourite bands.
This year things are different because another weekend of bluegrass and traditional music has sprung up at Marco Polo land in Cavendish. Marco Polo Land has long been considered one of the premier campgrounds in PEI and it is now the home of what is shaping up as a great weekend of music, September 1416.
The whole experience starts on Friday evening September 14 with an open mic as well as a couple of sets by Island bluegrass artists. The show starts again at 10:30 Saturday morning and runs through to 10:30 pm with lots of jamming to follow. Entertainment continues on Sunday.
The bands booked to date are Nudie and The Turks, The Grass Mountain Hobos, winners of the band showcase this year at the PEI Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival in Rollo Bay, SK Bluegrass, Bethany Coughlin and The Bluegrass Angel band, One Shot Deal, Wayne Brown and Friends and Saddle River Stringband with others to be announced later.
There will be lots of surprises during the weekend and opportunities to meet with friends old and new and take in the pleasures of the north shore. Most of the artists will have CDs for sale so we encourage you to pick up a CD from your favourite band.
Tickets and reservations are available for both camping and entertainment by calling 1-902-963-2352. Most of the sites are either two or three way with lots of tent sites as well and the admission is very reasonable. Weekend and day passes are available.
It's good to see that there is another outlet for bluegrass and traditional music on PEI and this being a little later in the season and it is the only event of this kind in the Maritimes on this weekend we'd like to invite all of our friends from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to see how beautiful fall can be in PEI.
The folks at Marco Polo Land deserve a tip of the hat for taking the initiative in making this event possible and we hope that it'll become an annual affair.
Until next time don't forget to support live country and bluegrass music and listen to Bluegrass Island every Sunday evening at 9 pm on CFCY FM 95.1 in Charlottetown.
