Imperious Gaze

One Great Thing
by Ann Thurlow

Okay, I admit it. Sometimes I’d avoid him. Sometimes when I saw Milton Acorn coming toward my table at Pat’s Rose and Gray, I’d throw my coat over the empty chair, shun his imperious gaze. But the next day, the next day if, by God, if he didn’t stand next to me and declaim the most amazing poem about crows. I am thinking about this as I stare at Brian Burke’s portrait of Milton in the Confederation Centre’s foyer. He’s glaring at us, just like he used to. But in his eye there’s something that looks a lot like love.
