Eagle Window
Susana Rutherford’s stained glass in Lennox Island church

Susana Rutherford’s stained glass Susana Rutherford’s stained glass Susana Rutherford, artist designer and proprietor of Firehorse Studios, has just completed one of the highlights of her career as a stained glass artist. The project is a circular window for St. Anne Church of Lennox Island. At nearly 44 inches in diameter the window features a flying eagle surrounded by the Mi’kmaq hieroglyphs. The four directions are indicated by color and jewels that reference the layout of the church.

Susana says: “This project has been tremendously important to me. To have been asked to make a window of this significance by John Joe Sark and the community of Lennox Island is very important. The window is the first stained glass window in the church and is above the Alter. While all the ecclesiastical work I’ve undertaken have been part of my religious and spiritual learning this project is unique. The blending of Mi’kmaq symbolism and Catholic symbolism was an education for me. John Joe has graciously taught me about the history of the Mi’kmaq and French relationship and the equality that they shared and honored in the concordat of 1610. This relationship began with respect and recognition for each other that I think is still an important model for relationships between cultures and peoples the world over. I spent the winter with a reading list and working out the design. John Joe Sark also invited me to a sweat lodge and prayed for me to the Creator to help me with this window, once again I felt very privileged to have had this opportunity. The design was circulated to the band before meeting with John Joe Sark for final approval in January. The creation of the window allowed me to use some of the finest glass available and to combine my painting skills with the glasswork. I am very please with the results and look forward to the Pow Wow and ceremonies at the end of the month.”
