American Classic

The Other Notebook
by David Helwig

What makes a movie touch us, resonate? With such a collaborative, highly artificial form of narrative it’s hard to say, but sometimes the combination of script, actors, cameraman, director creates something like art. In my CBC days I saw filmmaking from the inside, and given the cost, the organizational difficulties, it seemed a wonder that anything made sense at all. The French have invented a theory that calls the director the film’s author, its guiding spirit, but the industrial moviemaking of Hollywood often appears to make a mockery of the idea. Yet with certain movies there is a sense that something has led a group of talented people to a convincing unity of vision.

Merest Moments

The Other Notebook
by David Helwig

It’s one of those long June evenings when the traces of light in the sky hang on and on as you drive home. Soon enough it will be the longest day of the year—as close as time comes to standing still.

We are driving back from John Hopkins’ screening of Timepiece, his almost-completed film about his mother, Hilda Woolnough. The film takes its name from the major installation on which she spent several years toward the end of her life. Hilda died in 2007, but there she was on the screen tonight, larger than life as she created the big prints for the work and discussed the origins of Timepiece and the techniques involved in its production.

Mille Clarkes

Island Imagemakers
by Dave Stewart

Mille Clarkes Mille Clarkes Mille (pronounced Mill-ah) Clarkes helps other filmmakers get their projects done. And if there’s a film festival or screening happening on PEI, it’s generally a safe bet to assume that Mille is involved. She’s a smart, thoughtful person who’s deeply interested in telling stories. Here’s part of her’s:

Dave: What lead you to filmmaking?

Hugh Hefner Bio
Brigitte Berman brings her documentary to City Cinema

Brigitte Berman Brigitte Berman Brigitte Berman is petite, blonde and sports a fabulous smile. And at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival she was on the arm of the one-and-only Hugh Hefner. But don’t think arm candy. No way. Brigitte is an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker and was debuting her latest effort: Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel. When he saw it, he cried. The festival audience gave it a standing ovation. Some said the film revealed a man—this unapologetic maverick famous for being hedonism incarnate and usually in pajamas—as more honourable and ethical than many would have suspected.

John Hopkins

Imagemakers
by Dave Stewart

A youthful John Hopkins A youthful John Hopkins I’ve known John for a long time through osmosis via the local film community. I’ve seen some of his projects, I’ve been a member of the Island Media Arts Co-op with him, and I’ve had chats with him, but I’ve never gotten in-depth with him about what makes him tick film-wise. Here, in less than 550 words, is an attempt to get at the tip of the iceburg.

Dave: I imagine you grew up in a very creative environment. Can you tell me about that?

Timepiece

In Her Own Write
by Ann Thurlow

Timepiece Timepiece In 2001, Hilda Woolnough was working on a major exhibition for the Confederation Centre of the Arts. The exhibition, called Timepieces, was a musing on time and the impermanence of everything.

Her son, filmmaker John Hopkins had just gotten his own camera. The camera freed him to make films without the restriction of looking for funding, and having to have a specific plan.
