Independent Island producers form new organization

Missing from photo: Cheryl Wagner, Jeremy Larter, Corin McFadden In effort to support Prince Edward Island’s film and digital media scene and foster new growth, a group of independent Island producers have formed the Island Film Factory, an organization dedicated to the promotion and expansion of the entertainment industry on PEI.

“Film and digital media is a great export for PEI,” says President Mark Sandiford. “It subtly and powerfully advertises our beauty and culture worldwide, while creating cool jobs at home.”

Island Film Factory members have made great strides this year. Cheryl Wagner, creator of the hit kid’s TV show The Big Comfy Couch, produced Bunny Bop!, a fifteen episode web series for preschoolers. Jason Rogerson not only produced 10 episodes of web comedy, Bunkerdown, but won the CBC 3-2-1 Award to produce Lucky 7, a short film about an office lotto pool gone terribly wrong.

After Adam Perry’s feature film Jiggers premiered at the Atlantic Film Festival, he went on to create Chef Micheal Smith’s web series, Food Country.

Jeremy Larter, well-loved by Islanders for Profile PEI, received global attention when his web comedy Ponderings was nominated for the prestigious Vimeo Awards for best web series.

Documentarian/viral media maven Mille Clarkes has over 85 thousand online views for her film December in Toronto, and her democracy video Everything Matters, has sparked a movement of video posts on Facebook.

Brian Sharp, Renee Laprise and Mark Sandiford are all busy working on the youth series N3XT TV. They also organized a series Digital Media Workshops that trained numerous people in PEI for directing/acting/lighting/editing and brought in some of Canada’s top people in the industry (Liane Balaban, Rion Gonzales, Michael Kennedy) through the production of three short films. Sharp and Laprise’s company, Mugisha Enterprise, produced Island illustrator  Troy Little’s Angora Napkin into an animated pilot that aired on Teletoon. The television series is now in development with the Cartoon Network.

Louise Lalonde’s PEI Screenwriter’s Bootcamp develops emerging writers in the region and is in its fifth year this June.

Veterans of the bootcamp, Harmony Wagner and Susan Rodgers now both have comedy feature films in development to be shot on PEI.

“It’s clear that PEI’s music scene is thriving and achieving international acclaim because there is a support system for the creators,” says Island Film Factory VP Brian Sharp. “We aim to do the same for Island Filmmakers.”

Check out the latest independent Island cinema at the Island Media Arts Festival (IMAF) across PEI May 12–15. The Island Film Factory will host the IMAF after party at The Guild subsequent to the Gala screenings on May 15. Join them for libations and nibbles to celebrate PEI filmmaking.
