Jazz at the Haviland
The Haviland Club in Charlottetown hosts a jazz concert series. House band—Glen Strickey, Ian Toms, and Ross MacDonald—perform with a variety of special guests. May 24 will feature special guest Rob Drew playing selections from Jennifer Drew’s new world suites. Show starts at 9 pm, with doors open at 8 pm. Abbey Road on Mainstage
On the Mainstage of the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown on May 1, at 8 pm, Classic Albums Live’s band of top Canadian musicians recreates—note for note, cut for cut—one of the true masterpieces of rock n’ roll, The Beatles’ Abbey Road album. After they finish the album, the band will perform other classic Beatles songs. Beatles fans should not miss this performance.
Missa Brevis D-Moll K.65
As its Ascension Thurday observation, St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir, together with a string orchestra, will perform Mozart’s Missa Brevis D-Moll K.65 in the context of its Latin Mass for Ascension Day. Returning to Salzburg after one of many musical tours with his father, the exhausted thirteen-year old Wolfgang Mozart was asked by the Archbishop of Salzburg to compose a mass to mark the opening Convocation of Salzburg University. It would be a Missa Brevis, as the Archbishop requested it last no longer than one hour. Thus, Mozart’s Missa Brevis D-Moll K. 65 was composed. The service will include Gregorian chant, two Mozart Church Sonatas and the motet Laudate Dominum by Maurizio Cazzati. Service takes place at St. Peter’s Cathedral, All Souls’ Lane on May 1 at 7:30 pm. A reception in the Cathedral Hall will follow.
Hank and Johnny Fundraiser
A Tribute Concert to Johnny Cash and Hank Williams will take place May 2 at 7:30 pm at Ecole Sur mer (French School) in Summerside. Advance Tickets can be purchased at the Summerside Country Store, MacNeil’s Convenience, and by calling Claude Simson at 888.2909. Proceeds go to PCH Foundation’s Equipment Fund.
Irish Music Session
An introductory workshop and session will be held at the Benevolent Irish Society Hall on North River Road, Ch’town, May 3 from 6 8:30 pm followed by a dance from 9 pm to 12 am. Jericho Road concert
Jericho Road Concert will take place at Cornwall United Church on May 4 at 7 pm. Tickets includes refreshments and are available at 675-4203 or at the church office.
Bluegrass Benefit Concerts
Bluegrass Benefit Concert Series presented by the PEI Bluegrass & Old Time Music Society will begin May 4 at St-Anthony’s Hall in Bloomfield. Show starts at 3 pm to be followed by an old time jam. Afternoon includes light snacks, 50/50s, and fudge sale. Bring your music instruments.
Pete Blanding CD launch
So Someone Will Remember, the Songs of Pete Blanding will be launched on May 9 from 7:309:00 pm at the Murray Centre, Kensington. Pete will be joined at the launch by other musicians who will play several of the songs from the CD. The launch will also feature music by the Long River Players.
Dance and Music
This is your invitation to dance traditional Irish Sets and Steps at the Benevolent Irish Society Hall on May 17. Workshops Saturday morning from 9:30 and afternoon from 1:30 with instructor Elizabeth MacDonald. All levels welcome. Many musicians will be present all day in preparation for the Concert and Dance Ceili Saturday night from 811 pm with music by the St Brigid’s Ceili Band, featuring female Irish traditional musicians from Nova Scotia. Impromptu music sessions will be encouraged all weekend so bring your instruments as well as your dancing shoes. For info call Fred or Mary at 675-4791. Charlottetown Legion Choir
Charlottetown Legion Choir will hold their Spring Concert on May 27 at the Charlottetown Legion at 99 Pownal Street, 3rd Floor. It begins at 7 pm with The Carmichaels Sisters as special guests. Tickets at the door or from any choir member.
Bluegrass jams
Bluegrass & Oldtime Country Jamborees are held at the Summerside Legion, 340 Notre Dame St, Tue at 7 pm with a jam at 9 pm. Slow Bluegrass Jams are held every Sun at the Murphy’s Community Centre, Room 106, 200 Richmond St., Ch’town from 6:309:30 pm. Bluegrass jams take place Fri 810 pm at the Superstore Community Room, Belvedere Ave, Ch’town, sponsored by PEI Bluegrass & Old Time Music Society. Bluegrass jams at Evangeline, Abrams Village, Sun from 29 pm.
BIS Ceilis
Ceilis take place at the Benevolent Irish Society Hall in Charlottetown on Fri at 8 pm from May to Sept. Brennan’s Music Session
The monthly acoustic music session will be held at Brennan’s Sun May 25 from 25 pm. The session is open to all musicians with slow session for the first one and 1/2 hours and a regular tempo session for the last hour and 1/2. Hosted by fiddler Roy Johnstone, the music mostly focuses on Celtic and traditional instrumental. Some written music maybe be provided. This is an all ages events and an audience is welcome. Brennan’s Irish Music & Dance
An Irish dance and music session will take place at Brennan's Pub and Eatery on May 18 from 2 5 pm. Everyone welcome. Come out and kick up your heals, or bring along your instrument or come to watch.
