The Kings Playhouse in Georgetown presents an evening of choral music featuring two of the Island’s chorus groups, the Abegweit Chimes and A Joyful Sound Chorus, on May 17 at 8 pm.
Since June 2000, A Joyful Sound is the new name for what was The Eastern Kings Chorus. The group felt a name change was in order because the former name was too “area specific.” Members are now from Charlottetown, Montague, Souris, Morell and various areas in between. The choir was founded in Souris in 1981 by a group of people with a common interest in and a love of choral music. A non-auditioned choir made up of people from all walks of life and various Island communities, A Joyful Sound has an extensive repertoire including classical, folk, musicals and sacred music. They have performed on CTV’s Christmas Daddies Show and have been a regular guest on CBC Christmas Shows.
A Joyful Sound has released three recordings and rehearses at Hillcrest United Church in Montague on evenings at 7:30 pm. New members are always welcome.
The Abegweit Chimes is PEI’s only women’s barbershop chorus and is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of its charter. A chapter of Harmony, Inc., the Abegweit Chimes is a group of approximately 35 women from all walks of life, and from various areas of the province, who value singing and friendship as an important part of their lives. Currently the Atlantic regional champions, the “Chimes” are known for their smooth, four-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style. The chorus has a varied repertoire of songs. Whether the song is upbeat and rhythmic as with “Sentimental Journey,” or mellow with nostalgia and longing as in “Georgia,” or sorrowful as in “I’ll Be Seeing You,” the women of the Abegweit Chimes will use their vocal skills to bring their music to life.
Tickets are available at the Kings Playhouse Box Office at 1-888-346-5666, www.kingsplayhouse.com.
