The Centred Screenings, hosted by The Island Media Arts Co-op (IMAC) will wrap up it’s second season with an gala of Canadian independent short films on May 5 at 7 pm at The Guild. The Centred Screenings run the first Monday of each month from October to May and are mandated to showcase the best in media artwork (film, video, installation, and sound) made by artists through media arts co-operatives. Each season the Centred Screenings showcase close to 100 films, and have special guest artists in to talk about their work from PEI and across Canada. Each screening also features an “artist challenge” in which one local artist is “challenged” to create a short work to present at the screening. There have been Super-8 challenges in which local filmmakers experiment with old technology and the retro feel of Super-8 film. Many of PEI’s best independent film and video work has been screened at the Centred Screenings, and the regularity of the event has built up a loyal audience and stimulated much excitement and activity in the PEI media arts community.

The final gala of the season on May 5 will feature one-minute videos created under the theme “I Heart PEI.” All kinds of people have come up with all kinds of ways to express their love (or other feelings) about our unique little Island.

As well as the one minute videos, the May Centred Screening will showcase a selection of short films made through media arts co-operatives from across Canada. These works are of a variety of genres, representing the best in independent media art in our country. Local artist Dave Bennett will be on hand to show his new animation for the Artist Challenge.
