A new performance space called Harmony House Theatre will open this summer in Central Queens. The former Hunter River United Church, which dates from 1836, was purchased in 2007 by Kris and Melanie Taylor. Kris, who also is known as the pharmacist in Hunter River and as a recording artist, has taken on the renovations—repurposing the interior for concerts, theatre and movies, and bringing the building up to present-day codes and comforts for year-round use. There will be a stage, box office, sound/projection booth, and a tiered floor with 140 seats.
Melanie is in charge of marketing and programming. She has the background and connections for this role, having worked in public relations for the Celtic Colours Festival in her native Cape Breton. When Melanie and Kris first considered purchasing the church, they discussed at length, between themselves and with people in PEI Community Development, what could best serve the community, and also operate as a self-sustaining enterprise. One of the key pieces of information they heard from the community was that young families in the area wanted something to do locally. This struck a chord with Melanie and Kris since they have four small children of their own. “It was the indicator to forge on,” says Melanie.
The goal for Harmony House is to offer 100 shows a year, three nights a week—one movie night, one guest artist night, and one regular show by Mulligan Stew (Kendall Docherty, John Webster and Sheila MacKenzie). Guest artists lined up so far include Dave Gunning, Howie MacDonald with Brenda Stubbert, Catherine MacLellan, Meaghan Blanchard and Bruce Guthro. Kris himself will perform for the opening on June 27. Plans are also underway to present children’s shows.
