Storyteller in Residence
Michael Williams to start storytelling program at MUSEartspace

Michael Williams in the Middle East Michael Williams in the Middle East Thanks to the Scottish Arts Council, Unipaz-UK and Charlottetown’s MUSEartspace, Scottish-Canadian storyteller and education consultant Michael Williams returns to PEI where he has been appointed the Storyteller-in-residence at MUSEartspace, Charlottetown’s community art gallery and workshop space at 211 Euston St. He will be developing storytelling sessions and workshops for children and adults throughout the summer.

Michael brings a unique perspective to his storytelling. In 2009, he was invited to join an international group of storytellers at Emerson College’s School of Storytelling in England. Entitled “Healing Words,” the troupe toured the Holy Land meeting various groups of Arabs and Jews. Michael and his colleagues used storytelling as a therapeutic tool to bridge the divide between these groups: to nourish dialogue and mutual understanding, to cultivate peace, health and well-being.

Upon his return to the UK, Michael transformed his Healing Words experience into therapeutic storytelling practice. “Conflict,” he explains, “is not unique to Israel and Palestine. It’s part of the human condition everywhere, even in my homeland. Thanks to the courageous Arabs and Jews who attended our workshops, I found the inspiration and commitment to apply what I had learned in the Holy Land to the people around me.”

Michael established his Healing Words storytelling practice in Edinburgh, Scotland where he regularly offers workshops and trainings to teachers, therapists, counsellors, mediators, nurses, care staff and others who work with people. He also works through the All Things Healing online community where he’s the editor of the Therapeutic Storytelling website (www.allthingshealing.com).

Last year, Michael made his first trip to PEI, where his workshops received an enthusiastic response. Now, once again, Michael offers Islanders an opportunity to learn more about the use of storytelling as a healing or therapeutic art in both their personal and professional lives. More information about Michael’s workshops, kids camps, and coaching can be found at www.museartspace.com or drop into MUSEartspace at 211 Euston Street in Charlottetown and say hello.
