Save Our Seas and Shores PEI (SOSS PEI) the UPEI Environmental Society will host a Save the Whales fundraising event on January 21, 2–4 pm, in Room 242, MacDougall Hall, UPEI, Charlottetown. (stormdate January 28) Proceeds will help support Ecojustice and the Sierra Club Canada Foundation in a court action to protect the Gulf of St Lawrence from unlawful oil exploration.
Tonya Wimmer, Director and Founder of the Marine Animal Response Society (MARS), will speak about efforts to protect whales and other marine animals by reducing threats from human activities such as fishing, marine traffic, seismic testing and oil exploration.
A marine mammal biologist, Tonya Wimmer has 20 years of experience studying and protecting marine animals, particularly by working to ensure human activities are sustainable and conducted responsibly. Only about 450 right whales are left.
Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Program Director, Sierra Club Canada Foundation, will speak about the court case led by Ecojustice on behalf of Sierra Club Canada Foundation and four other environmental organizations. These organizations are taking the NL offshore petroleum board (C-NLOPB) to court for contravening the Accords Act by issuing a new licence to the same company, Corridor Resources, for the same piece of ocean after the maximum nine-year term of its licence had expired.
