Generations of Fascinating Ladies tours the Island
May 3
St. Paul's Church
Generations of Fascinating Ladies is a tribute to the female artists and girl groups of the last century, including the Boswell Sisters, Andrews Sisters, The Maguire Sisters, Etta James, The Chordettes and more. Songs will include: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, In the Mood, Sentimental Journey, Sincerely, Tell Him and the Shoop Shoop Song.
This musical revue is nearing the end of its 2018 tour of the Island, having visited numerous venues across PEI including manors, community care facilities, hospitals, and community halls.
“Young at Heart Musical Theatre for Seniors is a charity organization in its 13th year of providing professional entertainment for Island seniors, especially those living in long term care,” says Artistic Director and co-founder Catherine O’Brien. “We are increasing our audience each year, and strive to reach as many elder Islanders as possible from tip to tip.”
Each year the company raises funds to produce a professional musical that will tour across PEI to manors, community care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and places where seniors gather. The venues donate a small portion of the cost, while the rest is raised through grants, sponsorships, fundraisers and private donations. “It’s always a challenge to raise enough money each year,” says O’Brien. “Part of our mandate is to make the shows accessible to seniors, regardless of their ability to pay. We are grateful to the Province of PEI Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture for some of that much needed funding.”
Generations of Fascinating Ladies features Kelley Mooney, Allison Kelley and Suzanne Wilkie. “We are thrilled to have such a talented cast for this show. As individual artists they are fantastic — together they are dynamite,” says Young at Heart board member Laura Bird.
A fundraising concert featuring Generations of Fascinating Ladies plus special musical guests and a dessert extravaganza will be held at St. Paul’s Church in Charlottetown on May 3 at 7 pm.
The Charlottetown Jazz Ensemble’s May 8 concert at the Pourhouse will feature guest artist Catherine O’Brien. Money raised at that event will support future Young at Heart productions. www.facebook.com/PEIJazzAndBlues/; www.yahtheatre.com/yaht
