Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the PEISO

May 26

Kelley Mooney will lead Lady Soul at PEI Brewing Co.The PEI Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 50th birthday on May 26 with an entire day of events across Charlottetown.

The PEISO performed their first concert in 1968 and continues to present four large concerts and several smaller chamber performances each year to thousands of loyal patrons across Prince Edward Island. In an effort to give back to those supporters, May 26 will feature several free musical performances throughout the city in the morning and afternoon, as well as a larger concert-reception at the PEI Brewing Company in the evening, on what the PEI legislative assembly will officially declare PEI Symphony Day.

The day’s celebrations will begin at the Charlottetown Farmers Market with a morning performance by the PEISO Brass Quintet. Then, in the early afternoon, violinists Michelle Baldwin and Judy Yun will perform at Receiver Brass Shop. Weather permitting, there may also be music on Victoria Row’s outdoor stage, with performers to be announced.

The PEI Brewing Company main event will begin at 7 pm, where the entertainment will continue with the Singing Strings Youth Orchestra, a jazz trio from Holland College’s SoPA program, and finally the evening’s headliner, soul/motown band Lady Soul will carry the event to its midnight conclusion. The party will be emceed by Four-Teller Gary Evans, and a display of slideshows, videos and photos will trace the PEISO’s 50 year history. Birthday cake will be served, and the Brewing Co’s regular food and drink menu will be available for purchase.

Locally sourced auction items will also be available for bidding, both online and at the event. Online bidding will take place prior to the event and then close for continued bidding at the venue itself. Proceeds from the auction will be used to offset the cost of the day’s celebrations. Find the auction online at

All of these events are free of charge (donations accepted), and are child-friendly until 10 pm.  More information is available at
