From Broadway to Hollywood
St Paul's Church
On June 3 at 3 pm, conductor Leo Marchildon will transport audiences on a magical carpet ride throughout America with the PEI Pops! as they visit Oklahoma, Chicago and New York (West Side Story). Later in the program they will visit the outer limits of the universe with music from Star Trek, Star Wars, E.T., Superman. There will also be a salute to the Big Bands and iconic themes from such Hollywood classics as Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, and Magnificent Seven.
The PEI Pops! has enjoyed an explosion of popularity since rebranding themselves last year from their origins as the Strathgartney Chamber Orchestra. Although classically trained, Leo Marchildon spent much of his life working in stage and screen, thus the move from classical repertoire to more popular styles of music was an easy transition.
The 30-piece community orchestra provides a unique performing opportunity for musicians from all walks of life, whether university/college students or professionals and volunteers to perform audience pleasing music in a true symphonic setting. The group recently teamed up with the Welshmen Band at Holland College to present an evening featuring over 50 musicians on stage.
The concert takes place at St. Paul's Church on Prince Street in Charlottetown. Admission is by free-will offering.
