St. Dunstan's Basilica
St. Dunstan’s Basilica in Charlottetown invites all to their annual Christmas Concert. Over fifty choristers are accompanied by the PEI Pops, all under the direction of Leo Marchildon.
This year’s program features Bachʼs Magnificat and the Island premiere of Fantasia Noel 2 by Joshua Spracht.
Sung in Latin, Bachʼs Magnificat musical setting is rich in structural complexity typical of the Baroque period. Vocal solos are by Sylvia Mutch, Angele Rix, Kara Callaghan and others.
The carols making up Fantasia Noel 2 may be familiar to almost everyone; however, composer-arranger Joshua Spracht tailors these traditional tunes for a contemporary sensibility.
The highlight of the concert is when lights are dimmed for the singing of Silent Night by candlelight.
The concert takes place December 21 at 7 pm. This tends to be a popular event, so consider arriving early. Although admission is by free will offering, a limited number of tickets will be issued, available for pickup from December 8 on, either at the church following the weekend Masses or at the parish office during regular office hours. Those arriving without tickets will have to wait in a standby queue until those with tickets have been seated.
Due to fire regulations, doors will be closed once 1,000 attendees have been admitted, so plan to arrive early.
