Jenni Zelin shows A is for Angst at The Guild
A lighthearted look at a negative emotion,” is how Charlottetown artist Jenni Zelin describes “A is for Angst: An Alphabet of Woe,” her upcoming solo art exhibition at the Gallery @ The Guild in Charlottetown.
Opening at 7 pm on August 2, Zelin’s show features 26 pieces of art, each organized into an alphabet that takes a comic look at anxieties, beginning with, of course, “A is for Angst.”
This isn’t the first time that Zelin has tackled the theme of anxiety. “I did a version of the show on social media,” she explains. “It got such a positive response that it encouraged me to put this show together.”
Despite the theme of the show, Zelin is adamant that people know this is a show with a sense of humour. “I like to explore the theme of anxiety because we’re not always happy,” she says. “But having the chance to express those anxieties through art, to laugh at them, can turn those negative emotions around. My effort with the work here is serious, but the way that I’m looking at anxiety is not.”
As an added attraction to the main show, Zelin has dedicated a wall in the gallery to “A Murder, Indeed,” featuring a number of Zelin’s crow paintings.
Asked what gallery patrons should expect from her show, Zelin responds, “What should they expect? They should expect to laugh.”
A is for Angst: An Alphabet of Woe runs until August 13.
