Early work by Nova Scotia artist John Greer at Confederation Centre Art Gallery

Neither Here Nor There, 1973, wooden hand mirror by John GreerThe Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown will present Greer View Mirror, a selection of early work by Nova Scotia-based artist John Greer starting on September 30 to January 13, 2018. You are invited to an ArtTalk with John Greer on October 12 at 7 pm.

During the first several decades of his career, Greer was associated with the Avram Isaacs Gallery in Toronto (1970 to 1990) and this exhibition looks back at that period. It was a time when Greer’s work was characterized by a humble scale, a love of visual and verbal puns, and an interest in engaging viewers through surprise and paradox.

“We’re used to seeing John Greer’s weighty monumental sculptures made out of stone, bronze or marble,” said Pan Wendt, Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. “It’s easy to forget that he started out making whimsical, smaller-scale statements, often made with impermanent or humble materials.”

An influential professor at NSCAD University in Halifax for over 25 years, Greer was known early in his career for smaller-scale mixed-media pieces that reflected, with quintessentially Maritime wit, on developments in conceptual art and philosophical questions about the nature of the art object. Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia in 1944, John Greer is one of Canada’s most critically acclaimed artists of the past 40 years. Awarded the Governor General’s Award in 2009, John Greer’s monumental sculptures are known worldwide, and examples of his public commissions can be found across Canada, in Italy, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States.
