Interview with the Writer

Interview with the Writer

Profile: J.J. Steinfeld

by Sean McQuaid

J.J. Steinfeld's world-weary eyes and gently friendly voice offset his occasional fidget or stammer as I scribble his words into my notepad. He remains skeptical of this interview business-like a jungle headhunter wary of a camera trapping his soul.

Steinfeld, of course, has nothing to be nervous about. He is one of Prince Edward Island's most prolific and

Gathering of the Clowns

Gathering of the Clowns
Profiile:
Ron & Linda Wagner

by Sean McQuaid

Ron and Linda Wagner start their day as many couples do, with Linda tending their daughter while Ron dresses for work. The difference here lies in how Ron dresses for work: in white makeup and huge shoes. Ron and Linda are a couple of clowns-literally. Pies and seltzer are their bread and butter.

Ron has been clowning professionally for decades,

Sketch of the Artist

Sketch of the Artist
Profile:
Dale McNevin

by Sean McQuaid

I steal a sip of apple juice while the small, graying brunette across the table continues speaking, repeatedly folding and unfolding her place setting with methodical delicacy. Dale McNevin seems compelled to impose art on her surroundings in one form or another, a trait that serves her well in her career as an illustrator.

McNevin was born on the Island,

The Lighted Brush

The Lighted Brush
Profile: Maurice Bernard

by Sean McQuaid

Though born in Toronto, Island artist Maurice Bernard has always had roots on P.E.I. His parents were Island Acadians, but Bernard grew up in army bases across Canada since his father was a military man. In 1982, Maurice returned to his roots, taking up permanent residence in Summerside, P.E.I., where he established a full-time career as an artist.

Bernard,

We'll Always Have Toronto

by Sean McQuaid

UPEI's "Winter's Tales" visiting writers program has showcased some of Canada's most innovative and successful authors, the latest being poet and novelist Anne Michaels. A Governor General's award nominee, Michaels has been praised extensively for her two poetry collections: Weight of Oranges (1986) and Miner's Pond (1991).

A Toronto native, Michaels feels

The Oleannekenstein Monster

The Oleannekenstein Monster
Profile:
Nancy McLure

by Sean McQuaid

It's been said that there are no small parts, only small actors: petite, soft-spoken Nancy McLure would qualify (literally) as a small actor, but she has made a big impression on the Island theatre scene as a founding member of Off Stage Theatre and a longtime associate of Theatre PEI - with whom McLure recently landed the female lead in their late March

Redstone

Redstone

Profile: Sharratt, Carmichael and Rolfe

by Sean McQuaid

Steve Sharratt and Margie Carmichael have established a reputation for themselves as a popular singing and songwriting duo, but they're breaking new ground with musician Sigrid Rolfe as the trio called Redstone. "We thought of calling ourselves Steve and the Old Babes," Sharratt says, but Redstone was the first name they all agreed on.

Sharratt

Shoemaker

Profile:
Margaret Hubley

by Sean McQuaid

Margaret Hubley may not be familiar to you- but you might have seen her shoes. No, she's not a Sears catalogue footwear model; she's a custom shoemaker specializing in theatrical, dance and period footwear.

Now based in Morell, Margaret is an experienced shoemaker and leathersmith who has only recently extended her services to the general public. Prior to
