Sociable Singles members Jean Kowalski and Geoff Irvine at Dooley's on pool night. The Sociable Singles, a non-denominational, non-profit social group, has been providing the widowed, divorced, separated and unmarried with an opportunity to socialize since its formation in 2000. The group, which has grown from 15 to 83 members, includes people in their 40s to those in their 70s.

Social activities are planned on the first Saturday of each month when the group meets at 7:30 pm in the Community Room of the Atlantic Superstore on Belvedere Avenue. Activities decided upon are recorded and later compiled into a newsletter which is sent to all members either by mail or email. Each activity listed has a contact name and number so members can call if they plan to take part in a particular activity. All singles are welcome to attend the planning meetings. New ideas are welcomed. Annual membership fee in the Sociable Singles is $15, mainly to cover the cost of the newsletter.

Many activities are offered—dancing, pool, mini golf, bowling, skating, barbecues, potlucks—and some members had a good time last winter getting together to play cards and going to hockey games. Obviously all of the Sociable Singles more than 80 members do not choose to participate in every activity. There are groups within the group that like to play pool and dance. These being the most popular activities, often 20 or 30 people will turn up. "I can't play pool but I love to go for the sociability," says member, Reg Gay. "But it's amazing how some have improved." And there are smaller groups who like to bowl, skate or play mini-golf. Others get together for theatrical productions, movies and restaurant meals. As another member, Edith Creighan, says, "It's much more fun than going out by yourself."

The Sociable Singles have been talking about having a singles dance for some time. It's finally going to happen on September 13. Singles 40 and over, are welcome to the group's first dance party which will take place in the Canada Room at the Charlottetown Legion. Dino Dunsford's popular band will provide a variety of dance music and there'll be mixer dances like Paul Jones to make sure everyone has a great time.
