May 12 is International Awareness Day for myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM). This date was chosen as it was the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, the British Army Nurse who became chronically ill with what is thought to have been Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was housebound and often bedridden for most of her life. CFS and FM are debilitating chronic illnesses which affect anyone. There are no medical or laboratory tests to diagnose these illnesses and no treatment or cure. Approx 4000 people on PEI are affected, and many more are undiagnosed. www.mefmaction.com
