Roméo Dallaire to speak
PEI Friends of True Patriot Love have announced that Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, O.C., C.M.M., G.O.Q., M.S.C., C.D. (Retired) will be keynote speaker at the 2nd biennial PEI Friends of True Patriot Love Tribute Dinner, November 9 at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown. A celebrated advocate for human rights, especially in regards to child soldiers, Veterans, and the prevention of mass atrocities, General Dallaire is also a respected government and UN adviser, a best-selling author, and former Canadian Senator.
Shake Hands with the Devil: the Failure of Humanity in Rwanda, won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction in 2004 and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for political writing awarded by the Writers’ Trust of Canada. It provided the basis for an Emmy Award-winning documentary as well as a major motion picture of the same name; and, has been entered into evidence in war crimes tribunals trying the perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide. Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire has devoted decades of leadership and advocacy on behalf of other Veterans struggling with PTSD, including the publication of his bestselling memoir Waiting for First Light: My Ongoing Battle with PTSD.
The True Patriot Love Foundation supports PEI Veterans, military and their families. Individual tickets will go on sale in September. Chair of the 2017 Tribute Dinner is Ms. Valerie Docherty, former PEI MLA, Cabinet Minister, and herself the mother of a serving member.
