With a brand new location at Sobeys EXTRA in Stratford, the Great Island Grilled Cheese Challenge presented by ADL and Dairy Isle took place on September 24. Chef Craig Doucette of Mavors Restaurant was crowned the 2017 Great Island Grilled Cheese Champion.
“The Association of Chefs and Cooks are pleased to present this event every September as a way to showcase the incredible local talent we have here on Prince Edward Island. Every year, chefs from all across the Island compete to create the best tasting, cheesiest sandwich,” said Irwin MacKinnon of the PEI Chefs and Cooks Association. “Mavors has received this award two years in a row.”
Celebrating 6 years in action, the Great Island Grilled Cheese Challenge encourages chefs to get as creative as they can using 100% Canadian cheese. The event brought over 15 chefs together, as well as cheese producers and the event's title sponsor, ADL and Dairy Isle.
Chef Craig Doucette of Mavors Restaurant was presented with $2000 cash sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada. Chef Diem Bui and Chef Tyra Russel of Papa Joe’s took home second place and $500 cash sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of PEI, Third place and People’s Choice were sponsored by Kays Wholesale and awarded to Chef Jane Crawford of Hopyard with a $250 prize for each.
The Great Island Grilled Cheese Challenge is a part of the Fall Flavours Festival which takes place all across the Island from September 1 to October 1.
