Five camps available this summer for young musicians
Island Rock Camps and Holland College’s School of Performing Arts are partnering to offer young musicians five summer camps to hone their skills and learn more about rock and pop music.
The rock camps have been run by highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Andrew Waite and his wife and business partner, Nikki, for the past five years, and have developed a core of students who return every year to take part in one or more of the week-long camps. Last year, the Music Performance program, part of Holland College’s School of Performing Arts, provided the venue for the camps, enhancing the experience for participants.
The camps take place on the college’s Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown, in the Music Performance program’s studios and ensemble classrooms, and the SoPA Garage. The final performance at the end of each week takes place in the Florence Simmons Performance Hall, giving the student an opportunity to find out how it feels to perform on a professional stage.
The camps are run by Andrew and Nikki Waite and other band members from Andrew Waite and the Firm. In addition to the three standard camps, Island Rock Camps is offering an advanced camp aimed at further developing stage performance, instrument skills and ensemble playing; and a song writing camp which will allow young artists to develop their song writing skills under the direction of established East Coast songwriters.
The camps start July 16 and run weekly, ending with the song writing workshop the week of August 13. Students can register online at www.islandrockcamps.com.
