Anne & Gilbert—The Musical

Review by Jane Ledwell

The advertising tagline of Anne & Gilbert is “Anne of Green Gables in love,” but the great fun of this musical is that it takes a mighty lot of effort to convince Anne of this possibility. In a play that celebrates the strength and sufficiency of women’s friendships, the female characters have some work to do to persuade themselves to

If These Shores Could Talk

Review by JoDee Samuelson

In one of Georgetown’s many cemeteries is a tall gray headstone with the following inscription: MEYRICK LALLY. DIED DECEMBER 15, 1847, AGED 5 YEARS 5 MONTHS. A CHILD OF SINGULAR AMIABILITY AND INTELLIGENCE.

The citizens of Georgetown have always had a healthy respect for intelligence and good humor. In 1887 they built a beautiful theatre and named it the King’s Playhouse.

Story Night

The Four Tellers

Review by Sean McQuaid

Growing up "down east" on PEI, live theatre wasn't exactly ubiquitous. Apart from school plays and the occasional cultural expedition to darkest Charlottetown, most of my early theatrical memories were made at the historic Kings Playhouse where shows like Dracula warped my impressionable young mind and helped instill a lasting enthusiasm for

An absolute triumph

Searching for Abegweit

Review by Jan Cox

If you don't do anything else this summer, see Searching for Abegweit — the Island Songs and Stories of Lennie Gallant, presented at the PEI Brewing Company, Kensington Road.

The venue is superb. And although billed as a musical, this is more than that. This is one man's love for Prince Edward Island. This is a production that satisfies all your

Annekenstein & Friends

Review by Sean McQuaid

The quasi–legendary Annekenstein sketch comedy run (1991-1997) wasn't my first live theatrical experience; but it was my first theatre experience as a fan, a show that brought me back again and again, so it looms inevitably large in my memory and my affections.

David Moses, Rob MacDonald, Laurie Murphy, Nancy McLure and Ed Rashed were

Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™

Review by Jane Ledwell

“What was I thinking?” The panicked thought raced through my brainpan minutes before the familiar overture of opening night at Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™. I had leapt at the opportunity to introduce the show to our six-year-old son, Sam. He’d never seen it, despite his older sister’s lifetime devotion to the show from the rapt age of three. As he whirled and

The Melville Boys

Review by Ivy Wigmore

Of all charming seaside villages, there can be few more charming than Victoria. When the Trans-Canada bypassed the then-thriving village, Victoria was automatically set apart and so it remains, just off the highway but clearly a special place. The Victoria Playhouse, built a century ago, first served as a community hall; the theatre, established in 1981, retains the

Glitzy, Guilty Pleasure

Mamma Mia!

Review by Sean McQuaid

Dubbed “the guiltiest pleasure of the summer” by its director Adam Brazier, Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical stitched together from cheesy old pop songs. Not exactly a recipe for high art, nor emblematic of the Festival’s stated cultural aspirations.

A little crowd-pleasing fromage on the Festival menu helps pay for said aspirations, though, and there’s
