Behind the lenses of Anna, Lorne and Moe
Pixbylorne is Lorne Miller, an event photographer living and working in PEI, who covers the Island music scene. For the last seven years Lorne has been fortunate enough to combine two of his passions—live music and photography—by covering over 100 music events each year. These events include Music PEI Week Showcases and Awards, on and off-Island ECMAs, Contact East, Festival of Small Halls, Charlottetown Jazz & Blues Festival, Funk the Dunk, Dunkstock, Indian River Festival, as well as performances at venues such as The Guild, The Mack, Harmony House, Harbourfront Theatre, Victoria Playhouse, Trailside Café, Kings Playhouse, The Confederation Centre of the Arts, Back Alley Music, The Dunk, The Old Belle River Church, Globe Blues Jam and virtually any and every local club or venue where live music is featured. His work can be seen monthly in The Buzz and regularly on the websites of The Guild, Indian River Festival, The Buzz, Music PEI, as well as issues of Saltscapes Magazine. Lorne has been named Music PEI Visual Artist of the Year for 2012–2013.
I’ve been exposed ;-) to photography my whole life. My grandfather loved taking pictures, passed that love along to my uncle Frank, who in turn passed it along to me. At one time in my childhood, I was given a very cheap and very plastic 110 film camera that may have been a free prize. That started an obsession. I still have some of those photos, although, I couldn’t tell you what the subjects are. They’re all either painfully overexposed or suffered from light leak.
Since then, I’ve upgraded my gear and honed my craft at local bars, branching out to cover festivals. I’ve been published in MacLeans and on the CBC Radio 3 blog. You can also find my work on websites: Nudie’s, and Gordie MacKeeman & His Rhythm Boys. That list might be incomplete.
I co-host a podcast focused on independent music called “The Moe & Martin Show” at canadaisamusicmec.ca/tmms, although it’s currently on hiatus. I am tinkering with the idea of taking it to YouTube. Maybe.
You can usually find me front row of a sweet live show with my camera, peddling delicious tea & tea related paraphernalia, curled up with a cat, or yelling about Doctor Who to anyone who will listen.
