Rebecca Parent joins Josh Wiles in Anne & Gilbert
The 2018 production of Anne & Gilbert – the Musical begins in May and features Rebecca Parent and Josh Wiles in the starring roles.
For Wiles, this is his first time as Gilbert in the PEI musical. It’s different for Parent, returning to a role that she helped defined in three previous PEI productions as Anne Shirley.
Parent says the challenge when revisiting a role is not to fall into old habits. “I still have a surprising amount of muscle memory lingering from playing this part before, and I want to shake that and discover Anne all over again.”
Although the character of Anne is celebrated for her directness, determination and joy, Parent says one quality often is overlooked. “There is a softer side to Anne which she seldom lets people see. She presents herself to the world with a certain bravado that I believe masks her fear of vulnerability. Anne is known for dropping the mask in anger, but in this play, it also slips for love.”
Since she last appeared in Anne & Gilbert, Parent spent six seasons with the Watermark Theatre. She directed a production of The Hobbit and she also toured in a show she co-created for the PEI 2014 celebrations, What to Wear to the Birth of Nation. Parent has worked in theatre, film and TV across Canada, most recently with 2b Theatre’s production of What a Young Wife Ought to Know by Hannah Moscovitch.
Anne & Gilbert—The Musical was written by Jeff Hochhauser, Bob Johnston and Nancy White.
The show runs from May 8 to October 23 at the Guild in Charlottetown.
