54th season at the Confederation Centre of the Arts
The Charlottetown Festival opens its 2018 season with a production of the the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. This timeless story with a modern twist explores the last week of Jesus’ life through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot.
Sharing the mainstage is Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™, now in its 54th season. Audiences will enjoy a different visual experience this year with a 360-degree revolving stage.
The Festival has developed new original musical works for this summer season. First is On the Road with Dutch Mason where audiences go on a road trip across Atlantic Canada in the back seat of a Cadillac El Dorado and find out what it takes to love, laugh, and live the blues with Canada’s “Prime Minister of the Blues.”
The second premiere is Stories from the Red Dirt Road where four Island stories are woven together through the musings of familiar Island characters and the music of heartfelt songs about life on PEI.
A free performance is presented daily in the outdoor amphitheatre with the TD Confederation Centre Young Company. Entitled Aqsarniit (“awe-saw-nee”), the Inuktitut word used to describe the northern lights, this production will be a high-energy, musical performance that re-examines the stories of Canada’s past and explores what stories we hope are told in the future.
Rounding off the Festival are two solo autobiographical performances with tour-de-force artists New Brunswick actor Shawn Wright in Ghost Light with and actor/comedian Sheldon Elter in Métis Mutt.
