Young at Heart Theatre tours the Island
Currently in its 15th season, Young at Heart Theatre will present this year’s touring show, Sadie Off The Rails, a musical trip in one act. This musical was inspired by the true story of Miss Sadie Calhoun, a vaudeville stage and moving pictures star who visited PEI in the early 1900s and performed hit shows to sold-out houses.
Sadie Off The Rails begins with Sadie’s return to the Island only to discover that the place where she was booked, the Charlottetown Opera House, has burned down. Never wanting to disappoint her fans, Sadie hops on the PEI Railway for a concert tour stopping at towns from up west to down east. She encounters fascinating Islanders, beautiful scenery, some tall tales and has plenty of fun along the way. Sadie Off The Rails was written by Diane Barnes and Wade Lynch and is directed by Marlane O’Brien.
With a company of three Islanders who sing, dance, act and are multi-instrumentalists, this show transports audiences back to yesteryear when the PEI Railway played a major role in everyday life. The show is humorous and touching, say orgainzers, and the music is delightful. In the words of Sadie Calhoun herself, “it’s a production that you should see and whose characters are ones you should know!”
Young At Heart Musical Theatre for Seniors, Inc., a not for profit organization, that produces original Canadian musicals and presents them to isolated seniors who are living in community care centres, hospitals, manors, seniors’ residences and other venues where seniors gather.
