Rob MacDonald presents four of his plays in November
Island audiences are familiar with seeing Rob MacDonald onstage in Annekenstein, Sketch-22, The Popalopalots and any number of other theatrical productions. From November 22 to 25 at The Guild, however, he will be behind the scenes, writing and directing “Four One-Act Comedies Did by Rob MacDonald.”
MacDonald describes the show as “an evening of one-act comedies written by me, each quite different in theme, all pretty light in tone, all fairly family-friendly.”
“I’ve written boatloads of comedy sketches over the past 30 years and wanted to challenge myself to writing something a little bit bigger,” explains MacDonald. “It’s been a while since I’ve presented any scripted material, and I’ve come to realise that I really miss it and the camaraderie that tends to occur amongst cast and crew.”
Taking to the stage under MacDonald’s direction are Alicia Arsenault, Adam Brazier, Kassinda Bulger, Kelly Caseley, Jay Gallant, Cameron MacDonald, Rachel MacLeod, Lennie MacPherson, Graham Putnam, Rory Starkman and Tim Wartman.
Adds MacDonald, “…I decided to go with casting a different actor for each character. I’ve had specific actors in mind all along, but I was eager to draw from the ever-growing pool of talented, interesting younger actors who have been doing great stuff.”
“I’ve never ‘just’ directed,” says MacDonald I’m curious to see how this affects the rehearsal process, and the end result. I’m also curious to see how stuff I’ve written gets perceived when I’m not on stage to make goofy faces if the words don’t get laughs.”
“…I also think there’s a place for theatre whose sole ambition is to entertain. That’s what these plays are: unadulterated entertainment.”
“Four One-Act Comedies Did by Rob MacDonald” plays at 8 pm from November 22 to 24, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, November 25. Tickets are available online at www.theguildpei.com or at The Guild box office, 111 Queen Street in Charlottetown.
