Holland College offering five camps this summer
Island Rock Camps is launching two new week-long camps this summer. Island Rock Camp is an opportunity for students to learn about music in an engaging way, being part of a band, learning covers of pop and rock hits, and playing with friends.
A new advanced camp is aimed at further developing stage performance, instrument skills and ensemble playing. There will also be an additional focus on music business, acquiring funding, and basic demo recording. A new songwriting camp will allow young artists to develop their songwriting skills, and will also include daily workshops with established East Coast songwriters.
Island Rock Camps have also announced that the Christian Gavard Bursary will shift in its focus this year, funding students to attend a week-long camp. One student will be chosen from Prince Street, St. Jean’s and Parkdale schools by their music teachers, and the bursary will cover all registration costs. Christian Gavard believed all children should be provided with the opportunity to experience the joy of acting, the wonder of learning to play an instrument or the fortuity to develop their singing artistry. It is the hope of the bursary committee that these bursaries will enable more youth to explore the world of music and its beauty while also teaching them new skills.
Island Rock Camps has partnered with Holland College’s School of Performing Arts, and will offer five options for camps this summer. The camps take place on the college’s Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown, in the Music Performance program’s studios and ensemble classrooms, and the SoPA Garage. The final performance at the end of each week takes place in the Florence Simmons Performance Hall, giving the students an opportunity to find out how it feels to perform on a professional stage.
