The Birds and The Bees, by Mark Crawford, will play at Victoria Playhouse Festival this summer from June 22 to July 30. The production will be directed by Ted Price and will star Martha Irving, Wally MacKinnon, Geneviève Steele, and Benton Hartley.

Just three years after the debut of his first play Stag and Doe, Mark Crawford is currently one of the most produced playwrights in Canada. Since 2014, he has released a new script each year, including his most recent work Boys, Girls, and Other Mythological Creatures, a play for younger audiences. His play The Birds and The Bees debuted at the Blyth Festival in Ontario in June 2016 and played to almost complete capacity throughout its run at the Port Stanley Festival later that same summer.

Mark Crawford’s plays succeed at being at once topical and funny while appealing to both urban and rural audiences. Born and raised on a cattle farm in southern Ontario, Crawford easily taps into the authentic rural experience. The rural setting works well for his comedic scripts, he says, because the narrative context is already established, in a small town everybody already knows their neighbours’ backstories.

Crawford’s fast track to success as a playwright may be attributable to his many years as a professional actor. He has performed in plays of all genres, from Shakespearean tragedy to contemporary farce, for more than a decade.

“My experience as an actor has been the best training for working as a playwright,” says Crawford. “It has helped me to understand what does and doesn’t work in a play.”
