Summerside Lobster Carnival Parade, 1960

Summerside Lobster Carnival Parade, 1960

Friday, July 14, 2017

Since 1956, the Summerside Lobster Carnival has been the community’s primary festival celebrating the role of lobster in the Island economy and way of life. It also plays a large role in welcoming visitors to the western port city. This year’s carnival is planned for July 13 through 15 and along with lobster will highlight two of PEI’s other passions, harness racing and good entertainment.

Since its inception the carnival parade has been a big part of the celebration and the bringing together of community. The 2017 edition will see some changes in the parade, the first being the date. The parade is moving to noon on Saturday, July 15, the final day of the carnival, which will conclude with the running of the Governor’s Plate.

The organizers of the carnival have changed the parade in response to public feedback that it would allow more businesses the opportunity to participate and give more of the public the opportunity to attend. This year’s parade has not been themed in order to encourage participants to let their creativity run free. Lori Ellis of Culture Summerside and Lobster Carnival Festival Inc. says that she is counting on community spirit to spark and spread a wild fire of enthusiasm that will create and deliver a parade of the highest calibre.

Businesses, organizations, and individuals from right across Prince Edward Island are asked to go to the carnival website, to register their entry.
