The Victoria Playhouse welcomes Martha Irving to its stage for a second time this season. Irving is joined by fellow Halifax-area actor Lee J. Campbell, a long-time friend and collaborator. The pair worked together on the production Tompkinsville at Neptune Theatre in Halifax last winter. Tompkinsville was directed by Irving and starred Campbell as Father Jimmy Tompkins.
This time they will be co-stars in the Norm Foster comedy On A First Name Basis, directed by PEI’s Rob MacLean and Melissa Mullen. On A First Name Basis, one of Foster’s more recent scripts, is a more personal piece than many earlier plays. It was created by the playwright specifically for his old friend, actress Patricia Vanstone, and Foster himself has starred opposite her in several productions.
MacLean says, “It’s a great script—funny and dry with hidden depths. And Martha and Lee have great on-stage chemistry. They really make the most of some very funny dialogue!”
On A First Name Basis takes place in the home of successful spy novelist David Kilbride on the evening that he decides to finally take the time to get to know his housekeeper of 28 years, Miss Hopperstaad, including learning her first name.
On A First Name Basis plays Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm from August 5 to September 3. For information or to purchase tickets, contact the Playhouse box office at 902-658-2025 or visit www.victoriaplayhouse.com.
