The Victoria Playhouse will mount the Atlantic premiere of Myth of the Ostrich by Canadian playwright Matt Murray from August 4 to September 2.

This comedy premiered at the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival, where it was an instant crowd and critical favourite, before going on to become a hit on the Fringe circuit. The play had its main stage debut at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in 2016.

Mooney on Theatre called Myth of the Ostrich a “knockout comedy. It’s got sharp insight and laughs a’plenty. I’m still giddy more than an hour later.”

After Pam finds a letter from her teenage son to his sweetheart, she turns up unannounced to discuss matters with Holly, the other teen’s mother. What begins as a pleasant visit quickly becomes a complicated, bizarre, and hilarious roller-coaster ride of misunderstandings. The mess and confusion of the precarious situation escalates with the arrival of Holly’s outrageous and filter-less friend, Cheryl.

Native Islander Charlotte Gowdy comes home from Stratford, Ontario to direct Myth of the Ostrich. Charlotte shares her take on the play: “At its core Myth of the Ostrich is about parental love. It’s about the ridiculous scenarios that arise when two people with vastly different values collide. At a time when societies are being polarized by opposing opinions I believe that now more than ever we must try to get along despite our differences.”

The production features Playhouse veteran Johanna Nutter alongside Melanie Piatocha, who recently relocated to PEI from Edmonton, and Newfoundlander Renée Hackett, who was a member of the original cast.
