Dir: Debra Granik, US, 109 min. Ben Foster, Thomasin McKenzie, Jeff Kober, Dale Dickey
“Debra Granik’s film Winter’s Bone made Jennifer Lawrence a star—and there’s every chance the same will happen to teenager Thomasin McKenzie, who puts in a magnetic performance in the director’s latest drama, Leave No Trace. Her character, Tom, is being raised in a makeshift camp in the woods by her father (an intense Ben Foster). The two have a simple, seemingly contented life, foraging for food and trying to stay under the radar of the authorities: ‘off-grid’ doesn’t even cover it. When they’re discovered, both struggle to adjust to their new circumstances and more is revealed about their situation. Intrigue gives way to an involving character study that ponders on family, society, education, community and the impact of trauma. It’s visually stunning and Granik uses silence to terrific effect: the spaces between dialogue are as revealing as the words themselves. A slow-burning drama infused with both sadness and hope.” —Anna Smith, Metro (UK).
