A modern story of Indigenous life by Sheldon Elter | Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday evenings | 2nd floor

Sheldon Elter’s one-person autobiographical story, Métis Mutt, opens this month at Confederation Centre of the Arts’ new Loft space in the Confederation Court Mall, Charlottetown.

This play is a multi-character vignette that tells Elter’s experiences as a stand-up comedian in a coming-of-age story.

“There’s a time in your life when you need to take responsibility and that is this story,” says Elter.

The story behind this play goes back to 2000 when Elter was in school and working on a class project. After coming up with the name Metis Mutt in a moment of inspiration, he was encouraged by his teacher (and co-creator) to further develop the play.

Says Elter, “It covers large topics such as family violence, drunken alcohol abuse, intergenerational trauma, racism and focuses around my journey as a young man as a stand-up comedian and the death of my father.”

By 2002 it was a full-length play and premiered at NextFest in Edmonton, which features emerging artists, and then onto the Edmonton International Fringe™ Theatre Festival. It was then toured around the country, and eventually, became a motivational speech at schools across Canada.

“It’s finding out how we can inspire people with hope,” said Elter.

The Confederation Centre will be bringing this story to the Loft space as part of The Charlottetown Festival. Some work has been done on the one-person play to make it a well-rounded theatrical piece, including new additions about Elter’s mom.

They have also added projections and sounds cues to make the experience surround sound.

Sheldon has also been the star across stage and screen in such pieces as Caution: May Contain Nuts, Delmer and Marta, Hell on Wheels and Hank Williams’ First Nation. He was also a contestant on Canadian Idol in 2006.

Métis Mutt opened August 14 at the Theatre Loft in the Confederation Court Mall, location sponsor. The show plays Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm until September 1. For tickets visit confederationcentre.com/whats-on/.
