Saturday, August 25, 2018, 12:00pm - 03:30pm

At one time the Island was a veritable hotbed of religious fervor, as evidenced by the hundreds of churches that dotted every roadside from North Cape to East Point. Although many of these small churches have now closed, many are still open and thriving and in August the public is invited to visit some of the oldest churches on the South Shore.

A tour of historic churches of the south shore will take place on August 25. Eight churches from Cumberland to DeSable will open their doors from noon until 3:30 pm at which time tour participants will be able to admire the architectural features of each building and have questions answered by a knowledgeable church member.

One of the churches on the tour, Bonshaw Baptist Church, is described in the program as follows: “Nestled on the banks of the West River, this church was dedicated on Nov. 5, 1893 with a building fund of $104 on land donated by C.W. Crosby of Crosby’s Mills. It features cut shingle decorations, a pump organ (recently refurbished by Casavant), and a piano that was used to accompany silent movies in the old Prince Edward Cinema. All of the interior furnishings were made at the Spurgeon Hickox steam sawmill on St. Catherine’s Road. It is identical in design to Clyde River Baptist church.”

This self-guided heritage tour is sponsored by the Canoe Cove Women’s Institute, with proceeds being returned to participating churches to aid in maintenance of these heritage buildings.
