There will be a free session offered on September 20 from 7–8 pm with Dr. Grace. The title of the presentation is: The Case for Mandatory Comprehensive Sexual Health Education in Canadian Schooling. This session is open to the general public and all are welcome. It will be held at the MacKenzie Lecture Theatre, Holland College, Prince of Wales Campus, 140 Weymouth Street, Charlottetown. No registration is required for this event.

Dr. Andre P. Grace is Canada Research Chair in Sexual and Gender Minority Studies (Tier 1) in the Faculty of Education, University of Alberta. His research focuses on the comprehensive health, educational, and cultural concerns of SGM youth. Currently he directs the Comprehensive Health Education Workers (CHEW) Project for vulnerable SGM youth in Edmonton. In 2017, he received the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Community Justice Award in the Innovation Category for his extraordinary contributions promoting safety through crime prevention for the province’s youth.

“We are very appreciative to have such a knowledgeable and engaging speaker and advocate in Dr. Grace, who will present at our annual professional development event. This workshop is timely and important in that it brings professionals across the spectrum together to learn more about how we can care and support our Island SGM youth and families,” says Susan Doiron, event committee member.

In this workshop, Dr. Grace will address his resilience typology focused on recognizing and accommodating SGM youth, which he presents in his book Growing into Resilience. He will examine stressors, risk taking, asset building, and indicators of thriving in SGM youth dealing with adversity and trauma. Dr. Grace will discuss how he applies his research in operationalizing the CHEW project, an initiative he developed to focus on the sexual, mental, physical, and social health of SGM youth. Within this project framework, Dr. Grace will outline the pressing health, social, and cultural issues impacting SGM youth, whose safety, security, well-being, and accommodation are still not fully guaranteed in post-Charter Canada.
