Queer Songbook Orchestra

Wednesday, October 10, 2018, 07:30pm

LIVE @ the Centre welcomes Queer Songbook Orchestra in their PEI debut, October 10 at 7:30 pm at The Mack in Charlottetown.

Queer Songbook Orchestra (QSO) is a 12-piece chamber group dedicated to sharing queer narratives through the performance of pop music from the past century. The Toronto-based ensemble source their stories from the personal experiences of LGBTQ individuals and the songs that have meant most to them.

Carrying the belief that storytelling and song are powerful communicators that can increase understanding and foster community, QSO have been bringing this production to stages across Canada since 2014. By working with a base of familiar pop songs offered alongside QSO narratives, the listener is shown a new entry point into familiar music.

Songs like “Snowbird,” Taylor Swift’s “Shake if Off”, k.d. lang’s “Constant Craving” and Melissa Etheridge’s “Come To My Window” are reinterpreted by a team of skilled arrangers. These and other hits are performed by four vocalists and a storyteller, and through cello, violin, trumpet, oboe, horn, guitar, double bass, and drums.

The QSO have played some of the most esteemed stages across Canada, including the NAC and Luminato Festival. They have been in residence at the Banff Centre and featured on CBC. Their collaborative album with artist Vivek Shraya was long-listed for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize.
