Irish Cultural Centre Lecture - Greg Doran

Greg Doran will speak on Piety, Profanity, and Patricide: A Discussion of JM Synge’s “The Playboy of the Western World.” Doran will present a brief biographical sketch of Synge, discuss the play’s place in expressing Irish Nationalism, examine it from a dramaturgical perspective. Dr. Greg Doran is the Chair of the English Dept and Coordinator of Theatre Studies at UPEI. 

November 23
Gormlaith Maynes will talk about the traditional dance music of Ireland, its instrumentation, its tune types, and its styles and ornamentation. She will also address its evolution, influences and survival, and how it has developed as a genre today. This lecture will also draw on the similarities and differences between traditional Irish and Acadian music, session etiquette and repertoire. Gormlaith Maynes is from Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland. Concertina is her main instrument of study and she has a Masters in Traditional Irish Music Performance from the University of Limerick. She currently lectures in Irish at UPEI and is Coordinator of Celtic and Traditional Music at Holland College. 

November 30
Susan Brown will speak on Irish Women, the Vote, and Civil Rights. 2018 marks the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, granting the vote to some British and Irish women. Constance Markievicz, a veteran rebel of the 1916 Rising, became the first woman to be elected as a Member of Parliament. This talk will discuss the Irish campaign for votes for women and its aftermath. Dr. Susan Brown is an Associate Professor in the Dept of History at UPEI where she teaches modern British and Irish History.
