Edited by Todd E. MacLean
In October 2014, a book produced on PEI called Global Chorus: 365 Voices on the Future of the Planet will hit bookstore shelves on PEI and all across the country.
Since 2010, Todd MacLean has been using his spare time to bring together people from many walks of life from all over the world to answer the following set of questions:
“Do you think that humanity can find a way past the current global environmental and social crises? Will we be able to create the conditions necessary for our own survival, as well as that of other species on the planet? What would these conditions look like? In summary, then, and in the plainest of terms, do we have hope, and can we do it?”
Eventually, through many invitations, telephone interviews, and thousands of emails, MacLean succeeded in assembling a daily reader featuring pieces of words from 365 different people around the globe. People such as David Suzuki, Jane Goodall, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, Stephen Hawking, The Dalai Lama and many more are a part of Global Chorus, as proceeds from the book’s sales will go toward The Jane Goodall Institute, The David Suzuki Foundation and The Canadian Red Cross.
“Every day I am newly amazed,” MacLean explains. “I don’t exactly know how this project has successfully snowballed into the powerful global roundtable on our future that it has become; but I do know that I’ve worked very hard to bring it to life—and I just hope that readers all over the world will gain the daily insight, guidance and boundless inspiration for our future that I’ve gained from this project.”
PEI contributors for Global Chorus include Charlie G. Sark, Lennie Gallant, David Helwig, Jill MacCormack, Lawson Drake, Peter Bevan Baker and Chef Michael Smith. Global Chorus also features the PEI and Atlantic Canada images of three local photographers: Louise Vessey, Evan Dickson and Stefan Davidson.
MacLean will be embarking on a multi-city, cross-country book tour next month, and prior to this there will be book signing events in Charlottetown at the beginning of November. The launch party for Global Chorus is scheduled for November 3 from 7 to 9 pm at PEI Brewing Company, Charlottetown.
